India Ready?

'This blog is a personal blog written by Abbie Dowse. As such the views expressed are those of my own and not those of Project Trust.'

Where do we begin?

This Saturday I’m off… which is crazy – and it’s finally sinking in.
As some of you may have read or heard I’m going to teach in Ongole (pronounced 'on-goal') - a city in the Andhra Pradesh region on the South East Coast of India.

Jade & I on the last night of Training on the Isle of the Coll.

  What we already know...

  • We're the first Project Trust volunteers at Andhra High School
  • We will be working with 20 other staff (10 of which are casual)
  • There are 700 students, aged between 4-14
  • We will share a room with two beds,
  • Wear Indian clothing in and out of work,
  • & Have around 6 weeks holiday!

On paper it sounds simple... Just, Going to India.

Talk. Teach. Live. But in reality the fact that in less than a week I will be getting on a plane at London Gatwick, flying over to Dubai then changing for Hyderabad as a teeny group of four and not returning until August gives me an overwhelming sense of responsibility, yet freedom that I’m not used to. But - no excuses! I knew it was coming, this is what I chose - and in reality I genuinely do feel physically and mentally prepared for what's to come.

Miriam, Izzy, Desk Officer Tom, Me and Jade - Our 8 Month India Group!

Over the last week I've gone from 'I'm so not ready for this!' to 'I could jump on the plane tomorrow'. I know I will miss a tonne of people but keeping myself distracted will be the best thing, I've already had far too much fun choosing childrens books to take to use as inspiration for lesson planning. I will use this blog as a platform to stay in touch and upload as many photos as possible. The frequency of my updates will be Wi-Fi dependent but I’m excited to post back at each opportunity to let you know how I'm doing and what we're up to.

Books wise I've narrowed it down to...

  1. 'Guess how much I love you'
  2. 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'
  3. 'Ten Little Pirates' &
  4. 'The Lion who wanted to Love'
Plus an overload of stickers, stars and even the Big and Little Nutbrown Hare soft toys from 'Guess how much I love you'. (I'm sure I'll find a use, they'll make someone smile!).

So over the next week I'll just have to keep reminding myself after each 'man up', that really, 'I've got this' - cause deep down, I think, I have...
